Along the Hudson

Hello?

It’s been almost a year since I posted anything here. I’m going to try to keep this site updated more regularly, even if it’s simply sharing a monthly post.

The following is a post from my Substack, Along the Hudson, where I write fiction, share writing prompts, and offer monthly writing challenges. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please check it out and consider becoming a subscriber!

Enjoy!

I began writing on Substack in October 2020 under the publication name Micro 2 Go. I only wrote short fiction – most of the time fifty-word stories. After a year and a half, I started to question the publication’s name for several reasons:

  1. Micro 2 Go looked too much like a song title from the 1990s.
  2. After a quick Google search, I learned that Micro 2 Go was the name of a scooter.
  3. Overall, I felt the name pigeonholed me into strictly writing microfiction. I wanted to open the door wider and write whatever compelled me.

After giving the name a lot of thought, I chose Along the Hudson. I wanted to pay homage to an important source of inspiration in my life while giving readers a sense of where I live — and where I write from. I also viewed the Hudson River as a perfect metaphor for my writing journey.

Which, of course, still holds true today.

As of March 28, 2022, I’ve been sharing my fiction here at Along the Hudson. Though I still mainly write stories on the shorter side, I’ve veered into other genres and realms, and I even dabbled in serialized fiction by writing “Off the Trail”, a speculative tale told in three parts. Giving myself permission to write whatever I want to write — however I want to — has made a world of difference. And it’s been a hell of a lot of fun.

Changes continue to happen. In September, I started hosting Fifties by the Fire, a bi-weekly series of writing prompts asking writers to share their fifty-word creations on a specific theme. I also began sharing Embers (monthly writing prompts) with paid subscribers as a token of gratitude for supporting my writing.

As this journey progresses, I’ve realized something: I want to share how it’s going. I rarely do, and I find myself wanting to talk more about my projects outside of Substack – the messy novels and drafts and children’s book ideas that are constantly swirling around in my mind. I want to throw the door wide open and let everyone in; I want to continue to strengthen bonds and share stories.

So, in a nutshell, that’s what my monthly Embers posts will become. A “here’s what my writing life looks like outside of Substack” kind of deal. Oh, and at the end of each post, I’ll still include a small collection of writing prompts.

I’ve also decided to make all of my content — my fiction, Fifties, and Embers posts — free. If you happen to like my stories and want to support my writing endeavors, you can always become a paid subscriber. But, there’s no pressure either way.

And, lastly, I want to mention Fifties by the Fire. They won’t be going anywhere. I have too much fun hosting the “fires” and reading everyone’s stories. But, I am going to have to scale them back a bit. Moving forward, our hangouts will become monthly meetups, and they’ll happen on the second Friday of every month. This means that our next one will occur on April 14. As usual, I’ll share the prompt on Monday before the thread goes live on Friday.

To sum up, all readers of Along the Hudson will receive the following:

  • Weekly fiction – every Monday.
  • Fifties by the Fire – the second Friday of every month.
  • Embers – the fourth Friday of every month.

In total, this means six monthly posts. It feels like the perfect balance for me, and I’m excited to roll it out and see how it goes. Scaling back the number of monthly send-outs has given me time to focus on other writing projects, so it feels like a win-win all around.

Thank you all so very much for being here. It means the world to me. I love knowing you care enough to read and comment on my stories. You have become a wonderful source of inspiration and encouragement.

Take care, and thanks again,

-Justin

One of my ancestors is named Lewis Dudley Deming. He was born in 1820 and spent most of his life on the Hudson River as a boat pilot and captain between Albany and New York City. Though I will never be a riverboat pilot, I can’t help but feel the same draw to the Hudson that Lewis presumably felt. For some reason, my life has led me here, and it’s where my family calls home: the Hudson River Valley.

I’ve spent the past decade of my life either on or around this river. As a result, it provides me with a constant source of inspiration. Some of my best story ideas have come from quiet mornings, exploring or hiking along its banks.

That’s what you’ll receive if you choose to follow my Substack newsletter — my stories from Along the Hudson.

I will be updating this space with stories from my collection of archived fiction and creative nonfiction from my Substack newsletter. To check out my Substack, which has new stories and writing prompts delivered twice a week, please click on this link. If you like the material, I hope you’ll consider signing up.

Thanks so much for reading this. I hope you’ll continue this writing journey with me!

Micro 2 Go Updates

I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy.

I wanted to give a quick update regarding my Substack newsletter, Micro 2 Go. Several changes have been made – all good things!

Roughly a month ago I started to create daily writing prompts, and I named this section of the newsletter Prompts 2 Go. These prompts are sent out via email to all subscribers every morning at 7:00 AM (EST). The intended audience is for any writer, at any stage, who is looking for “story starters” or daily writing exercises. My newsletter could also be suitable for English teachers or creative writing instructors – or students!

In addition to the daily prompts, I’m sending out short fiction (or microfiction) twice a week. These stories are sent out at 8:00 AM every Monday and Friday.

If you are interested in checking out Micro 2 Go or signing up, please click here.

Thanks so much for considering. I hope your writing ventures are going well!

All the best,

Justin

Medium and Microfiction

I write a fair amount of content over on Medium.com. Admittedly, I used to post more work during 2019, but I still create weekly writing prompts over at The Friday Fix – and serve as the editor of the publication.

Recently, the publication has been receiving over fifty prompt-based stories on a weekly basis, and somewhere around twenty to twenty-five original works of microfiction. In total, I’m seeing seventy-five submissions roll in every single week. It’s both incredibly fun and daunting at the same time!

As the person behind the scenes doing a lot of the nitty-gritty work, I’ve realized I haven’t been writing as much microfiction lately. It also feels a bit strange to post my own stories on The Friday Fix, which has evolved into a niche community on Medium with almost 1,500 followers – not to mention over 200 writers.

For this reason, I’ve decided to create my own personal publication on Medium called Story Well. I’m in the process of transferring all of my old fifty-word stories from The Friday Fix archives (wiping some cobwebs and grime off them, too) to Story Well in an effort to rejuvenate my love for this genre. Maybe this will get some new eyes on my work, as well.

As I go about this, my plan is to simultaneously share my stories here on my recently polished WordPress site. I’m interested to see if this will bring on new readers. More importantly, I hope to create more fans of the microfiction form of writing. Who knows, maybe by this time next year I’ll have a collection of my very own stories to shop around to publishers.

Hmm…might there be a chapbook in the not-so-distant future? Only time will tell.

Get ready for a wave of microfiction!

Happy writing,

Justin

Two Recent Acceptances

Good news! I recently had two of my flash fiction stories accepted.

“The World is Ending and I Forgot My Grocery List” will be published over at Free Flash Fiction later this month. I’m happy the story found a home.

I’m even more excited about my story, “Charlie”. It has been accepted at Emerge Literary Journal and will appear in their November issue!

I’m grateful for these publications and their kind editors.

That’s it for now. Expect to see some Friday Fix posts soon, as exciting events and developments are on the horizon.

Happy writing,

Justin
